I am down to 7 ferrets now, one has passed away. As far as the question on getting along with cats, I also have 2 cats who are curious about the ferrets, but they stay out of reach of them. I have heard that if you raise a kitten up with them they are fine, mine just pretty much ignore them. My ferrets have their own room and the cats can (and sometimes do) jump up on the ledge and look in, but they mostly just leave the alone. :)
